Youth Vote Posts Strong Showing in 2012 Elections

New expert estimates indicate that turnout of young voters between the ages of 18 and 29 will likely exceed 50 percent in yesterday’s national election.  This strong showing places 2012 on par with record 2008 turnout rates and bucks predictions of a precipitous drop-off in young voter participation.

Youth Vote Increases at Local Student Precincts in Massachusetts

[Amherst, MA] According to preliminary results provided by local elections officials, several University of Massachusetts Amherst campus precincts showed significant increases in turnout over the previous national election.  Precinct 3, for instance showed a 29 percent increase, Precinct 4 showed a 21 percent increase and Precinct 5 showed a 27 percent increase over 2008.

More than 1,100 UMass students had turned out to cast ballots by 3 p.m. in precincts 4 and 10, said Lucas Gutterman of MassPIRG.

Local Youth Vote Campaign Launched Final Push To Get Out The Vote

In an election cycle filled with talk of every single vote counting, students at MASSPIRG campus chapters around the state launched a final campaign push, employing proven tactics to mobilize young voters to the polls.  Using on-the-ground and on-line strategies, campaign volunteers will reach their peers in classrooms, on computers and campus quads and urge them to cast a ballot.

Saving Dollars, Saving Democracy - Cost Savings for Local Elections Officials Through Voter Registration Modernization

Millions are being wasted due to antiquated voter registration systems and procedures. U.S. PIRG Education Fund’s survey of 100 counties showed that over $33,467,910.00 of public money was spent on simple registration implementation and error-correction issues in 2008. The Fund finds that a more streamlined and automatic system linking existing databases with the state voter rolls could free up significant resources at the local level.
