UMD, MASSPIRG celebrate environmental win

UMASS DARTMOUTH
Students and staff at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth recently got together for a celebration.

The reason: the passage of the Global Warming Solutions Act by the Massachusetts House of Representatives. The bill mandates 80 percent cuts in greenhouse gases by the year 2050.

At the celebration the attendees ate cake and acknowledged the historic moment: Massachusetts is among the few states in America to pass this legislation.

“Historically, Massachusetts has always been a leader in change, starting with the first shots of the Revolution. It is only fitting that we should be a leader in combating global warming,” said Vanessa Wright, MASSPIRG campus organizer at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Ms. Wright noted that while neither was able to personally attend the celebration, both Sen. Mark C. W. Montigny and Rep. Antonio F.D. Cabral offered words of congratulations, noting that both MASSPIRG and the UMass Dartmouth campus have worked hard to draw attention to the issue of global warming.

“I think it is important to show what we can individually do,” said sophomore and president of the Social Change Society Christy Mullen. “We all have the power to change things. The farmers’ market was started by one student on campus and look at the legacy it has created.”
