It is great to see the paper reporting on local action toward energy efficiency in the fight against global warming, including "green" burials. But while there has been much news lately about local action, especially in Fitchburg since the election of Lisa Wong, environmental action is something that should be done on a state-wide level as well. Currently, there is a bill in the Senate, the Global Warming Solutions Act, that would cut emissions in Massachusetts by 20 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050 -- science-based targets that will solve the worst effects of global warming. We urge the Senate to pass it.
As students at Fitchburg State College, we are concerned about the state of the environment and what can be done to lessen global warming's impact. Alternative energy sources, such as solar, wind and geothermal power, are important to help decrease emissions and reduce global warming pollution. While it is good that the city of Fitchburg is doing its part, more should be done across the state and even across the country. We urge the Senate to pass the Global Warming Solutions Act and prioritize energy efficiency, creating jobs and saving money across the state.
