A greener future - Berkshire Eagle (new window)
2008-03-10
It was little noted, but last month, EPA administrator Stephen Johnson acknowledged before a Senate committee both that global warming is "unequivocal" and that man-made emissions are largely responsible. Unfortunately, he did it in the context of arguing that California should not be allowed to pass stricter rules against vehicle emissions because that is the responsibility of the EPA - which refuses to act. It is great to see the paper reporting on local action toward energy efficiency in the fight against global warming, including "green" burials. But while there has been much news lately about local action, especially in Fitchburg since the election of Lisa Wong, environmental action is something that should be done on a state-wide level as well. Currently, there is a bill in the Senate, the Global Warming Solutions Act, that would cut emissions in Massachusetts by 20 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050 -- science-based targets that will solve the worst effects of global warming. We urge the Senate to pass it.
