Massachusetts leads the country in providing quality, affordable health insurance for everyone in the state everyone, that is, except students. If you are not insured by your parents or through your job, you have to purchase a student health insurance plan.
Unfortunately, most student health insurance plans are a raw deal. Many completely exclude common services like prescription drugs or put you at risk of going deep into debt by capping the amount they pay for common procedures like hospital visits. Even worse, the insurance companies are making a killing off us! For every dollar a student spends on a student health insurance plan, 31 cents go to insurance company profits and administrative costs. For all other plans in the state, its only 12 cents.
MASSPIRG is working in coalition with the Student Health Care Organizing Coalition to convince Governor Patrick to ensure a fair deal for students. We're working with the Division of Health Care Finance and Policy and Division of Insurance to implement real reforms right away while also working for long term solutions.
