Campaigns:
The Clark chapter is working on really exciting
campaigns--everything from combatting global warming on campus and in
the community, to fighting for affordable education and textbooks, to
aiding local hunger and homelessness efforts! Here's what we have
planned:
Stopping Global Warming Starts Here: MASSPIRG has
introduced great legislation to make MA a nationwide leader in clean
energy (15% by 2020). Here at Clark, we're working to educate our
peers, faculty, administrators, the local community, and even local
legislators on the problem of global warming and get them as excited
about the bill as we are! We'll be holding awareness events on campus,
like a day where we make smoothies from a blender powered by a solar
panel! Earlier this semester we showed An Inconvenient Truth in
partnership with the Democrats at Clark University and the Clark
Sustainability Iniatitive.
Campus Climate Challenge: Just as we're trying to take action on
a statewide level, Clark itself could use some greening! Clark is such
a leader on the environment already, but it is time to step it up and
go climate neutral! Excitingly enough, MASSPIRG is partnering with
Clark Sustainability Initiative to get the President of the school to
sign on to the President's Climate Commitment to cut global warming
pollution at Clark. Vote on April 3rd in the student council elections
to affirm your support for climate neutrality!
Hunger & Homelessness: Hunger & Homelessness is a huge
problem in Worcester and Clark students are at the forefront of
addressing it. We are planning a huge community picnic April 28th,
bringing residents of Abbey's House, Francis Perkins, and Jeremiah's
Inn to campus to share in a day of fun, food and relaxation. Come by
our office or our table to donate food or other necessary items. Also
the 23rd Annual Hunger Cleanup is April 14th. For more details visit
the hunger cleanup website: www.hungercleanup.org
Make Higher Education Affordable & Accessible:
We just convinced Congress to cut student loan interest rates in half,
and to increase federal Pell grants. But that is just the first step
to making college affordable and accessible to every student. We need
to continue our fight by cutting lender subsidies, increasing grant aid
more, and fixing loan repayment programs so that they are manageable.
You may have seen our Student Loan Debt Yearbook in the UC (check out
the entries at studentdebtalert.org. Come help us out in our efforts - attend a district meeting with your legislator, or submit an entry to the website!
Make Textbooks Affordable: The average college student pays an
insane $900 per year for books. We're working to stop publishers from
taking advantage of Clark students by building support for a statewide
bill to force publishers to disclose prices and give cheaper options
with "unbundled" materials. Look out for students in the media, or
come help us with some faculty organizing to get professors to put
alternative book options on their syllabi.
