Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week a Huge Success!

In these tough economic times, more than one in ten people in the Commonwealth is living in poverty. So this year, MASSPIRG students redoubled their efforts to educate and serve the communities where they live, learn and work. Eighty-nine student leaders and volunteers from MASSPIRG chapters across the state came together to make our annual Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week a huge success.

Bay State students organized can drives, clothing donations, film screenings, panels, and service events to bring their campuses together to tackle one of the most persistent and pressing problems of our time. Across the state over 300 students participated directly in educational events, and MASSPIRG students raised hundreds of dollars and collected hundreds of food items to donate.

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week continues to exemplify how MASSPIRG and its partners fulfill Universities' mission to serve their communities.

At UMass Amherst, MASSPIRG students teamed up with the Sociology Department to hold a training for student organizations on how to fight poverty in the local community. At Salem State University, the Student Government Association's Civic Engagement Committee cosponsored the week's events. And at UMass Boston, MASSPIRG students worked with their student government, the Student Leadership & Community Engagement Center, the Athletics Department, and the LGBT center to unite a wide range of students in serving their community.

And all across the Commonwealth, MASSPIRG chapters partnered with local homeless shelters and food banks to raise awareness of poverty and provide much-needed resources.
